|
|
Hello everyone. I've searched for a good answer to this everywhere, but I cannot find a great solution.
I have a mythbox with gentoo and a Windows XP computer. Files are downloaded with Windows and transfered to the mythbox.
I have tried transferring by wireless network with winSCP. I love it, but it bogs down the network and larger files take a pretty long time. And then the router crashes (every time).
I have done the usb flash drive, but this process is pretty time consuming (transfer onto drive, walk across room, transfer off of drive). Also, the files are getting pretty big.
Others, but the first two seem to be the most sophisticated.
I guess I am looking for the best method. Whether it be to upgrade my router and wireless cards or anything that might be considered extravagant price wise.
My idea is a 20 foot firewire or usb cable. Is this an attractive option? Firewire at 400 mbps seems awesome. What kind of software would I need?
Even better, what about a cat5 cable? iptables?
I ultimately want a combination of simplicity and speed. If anyone could enlighten me with a good method, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you. |

Using a wired network connection (cat5) will speed things up dramatically. Gigabit network cards are available cheaply as are gigabit switches. _________________ A few months struggling with gentoo is better than a lifetime struggling with windoze! |

Interesting. So, I can hook up a cat5 cable between the two computers, then what? Does it create a new network connections? |

Yes. It's how networks were created in the days before wireless... _________________ A few months struggling with gentoo is better than a lifetime struggling with windoze! |

Wow, I am actually very impressed with that solution. With WinSCP, I can copy at 1,260 kbps, (a 4.4 gb file in 59 minutes). Is there any way I can optimize that so I can get faster transfer speeds? Perhaps a different program? Can I modify the network type to show that it is one to one?I just figured that I would end up with some faster speeds.
Thanks for the help,
