Hi people.
Ive got my lean and mean fluxbox installed. But of course now Im lacking an assortment of of desktop apps.

Kde hat plenty, but I dont want to use that.

So far I have:

gkrellm
nedit
Opera Browser
Xmame+Gxmame
Aterm
Gentoo Filebrowser
Mplayer
Xmms

I'm still looking for:

1. a system process manager, so that I can view active processes and kill them without going to the console.

2. a utility to show me how much free space I still have left.

3. a good email client. I was thinking of sylpheed claws, but Im open to suggestions. The client needs to be able to import a UNIX email database file (from my old windows email app, TheBat). But I guess all email clients under linux can do that.

4. a good ftp client

5. a graphical app to search for files on my hd.

6. Any other suggestions for absolute must have apps?

A filemanager? You might try endeavour (mark 2) or xfe.

fluxter (pager). Very similar to bbpager.

You can't go wrong with NCFTP for an ftp client. It's command line, but VERY powerful and does background batch download/upload which is quite nice. It's a must have on all of my Linux servers. I even use it in Windows under CYGWIN.

As for the space-left application, I have given up on GKrellM as I find it to be a little in the way. So instead I have a peek on my disk usage ever now and then. "emerge gtkdiskfree" for a a nice graphical GTK2-util.

Also, "emerge gnome-system-monitor" will give you a graphical system monitor, a list of processes and means to kill them(more fun if suid). You also get a text list of free diskspace, updated at intervals.

I already use gentoo filemanager. I was thinking of a graphical app where you can for example say search for *.mp3 and it will scan your entire harddrive or just the folders you specify to find any mp3 files. You know, a search tool. I know you can do it via console, but I prefer to do it graphically. I remember under KDE there was an app that did this. Just cant remember what its called, but either way, any sort of app like that for fluxbox would be cool.

lftp for the ftp client. Tab completion, FXP support, Auth-TLS support. Very intuitive. Multi-threaded. Also supports FISH, hftp, and others too. You can emerge it, however the website is here:

When it comes to system monitoring apps, i.e. disk space, cpu load, net load etc etc you can try some of the window manager dockapps. they run in the slit so u can config them where and how they should appear. i myself use some and it looks great too. try for example wmmon, wmload or even wmmusic for some multimedia sweetness :D

If by "gnome crap" you mean stuff like EOG, gedit, or gnome-terminal, then yes.

If you mean stuff like bonobo, gconf, eel, gnome-vfs etc... then no.

Here are my suggestions.

For a process manger I would use wmtop, I think that can be configured so that when you click on a process it will excute a command. For the disk space useage I would suggest allin1, it can show you your current memory usage, battery left, processor state, hardrive usage, and net trafic. i find it to be a handy app. Do a search in bugs.gentoo.org for allin1 and you should be able to find an ebuild.

For what it is worth,

I ment mostly gnome-base, gnome-control-center and such. But I see now that it merges gtk libs and other devel stuff. Thnx
