|
|
Hi, I recently upgraded to gentoo-sources-r5 and I'm getting lockups that freeze the system and leave the LED's on the keyboard flashing. I have several other kernels functioning properly: 2.5.75, 2.6.0-test1, gaming-sources, and 2.4.21. Sometimes, the lockup occurs when I try to open a browser, though this is not always the case. Most of the time, the oops occurs at shutdown after X dies. A few services are stopped, followed by something like this:
Code: |
oops!
Process ifconfig
<big memory dump - I think. Looks like a bunch of hex in paragraph form>
Interrupt Handler not Syncing |
I'm sorry this is a lousy report, but depending on the feedback, I may copy down all the info in the error message and file a bug report.
Thanks for your time,

I have been getting random freezes using this kernel too. I wanted to try to isolate whether these were caused by the kernel or hardware. I am currently trying to recompile the vanilla-sources to see if they exhibit similar behaviour...
I hope it is just the kernel and not something more difficult to figure out... |

I'm using 2.6.0-test1 and 2.4.21 with no problems. gentoo-sources won't work for me. It locks up.
MoBo Abit-NF7-S (nforce2)
Athlon-XP Barton
SIS SATA (unused)
Tulip card,
8139too card. _________________ Really, I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect.

I wonder if it is anything to do with the motherboard chipset? I am using the ASUS A7N266VM motherboard which uses the nforce chipset by NVidia and running an Athlon XP 2000+. It runs for me but locks up randomly. I have been looking at the other sources available but I need one with the ATM patches for my ADSL PCI card.
I might look at 2.6.0-test1 as the 2.4.21 vanilla doesn't have the patches I need. Otherwise I could may be track down the individual patches I need and patch the kernel myself - never done that though so it may take me a while ot get my head around it.
Just some thoughts on possible cause of the problem - there is definitely something wrong but my logs don't give me any clues as to why it ocasionally freezes for 10 seconds or indefinitely sometimes... |

The same thing happens with me on a Pentium III 500 Mhz machine, so it's not looking good for a hardware issue.
Mine seems to lock up only when the monitor has gone into APM mode for some period ot time, so I am experimenting with "apm=off acpi=off" on boot as a kernel option....we shall see...

I'm using the latest gaming-sources because gentoo-sources locks up in 5 minutes every time. I've3 recompiled it a few times and gone with the most conservative options I could think of. The only time I can get any information is on shutdown when I get the :
Code: |
oops!
Process ifconfig
<big memory dump - I think. Looks like a bunch of hex in paragraph form>
Interrupt Handler not Syncing |
followed by keyboard flashing. I would like to file a bug report, but I'm afraid I don't have enough information for it to be useful to the developers. _________________ Really, I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect.

well, that's not it...."apm=off acpi=off" didn't help....when I woke up this morning, the machine was locked and I can't find any logs to tell me what happened. What led me towards apm was that the power switch on the PC won't work at all. I have to phyically unplug the machine to get it to power off. Luckily it's on the desktop so that's easy
Now I'm looking at hdparm, but it was defaulting to DMA on, so I don't think that's it....may have to go to vanilla sources and try a different kernel... _________________ [o] |
