|
|
Has anyone seen this problem before or am i just being ignorant:
Emerged kde (took almost 34 hours....zeesh) and it looks ok. as root kdm works. When i log onto just any old username, and type in kdm i get :
$ kdm
Only root wants to run kdm
$
if i run it as root ( i know bad me ) then it starts up no problem. I get two people in the menu : plain_user and root.
root can login and run kde no problem, but when i try to log in as plain_user i get a box saying : installation problem detected while trying to start KDE:
Writing to the temp directory (/tmp) failed with the error 'Permission Denied" KDE unable to start.
Now the two things are unrelated i guess, and assgining the user to a proper group would fix things. I also have to edit xinitrc to run kde (kdm). Any ideas what could be causing this problems???
Thanks guys.
EDIT: also i missed one box right after you close the first one:
Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation.
Does that help any???

well i can tell you that you're confused.
kdm is the k desktop manager. you *have* to run it as root. same as xdm or even login.
pretty much you put kdm in your /etc/rc.conf and then start xdm on boot, so you get a nice login screen.
i'm not sure about the second thing though. maybe someone else. |
