I'm stuck at work behind their proxy, I've got the ip address of the proxy and it's using port 3128, typical squid port.

I'm stuck on Windows too... Trying to use putty to log in to my machine at home, I've put the ip address and port number in to putty's proxy section, but it won't work.

Anyone able to help? This is really frustrating as I like to be able to monitor my machines at home and make sure there are no problems.

which "proxy type" did you tell putty to use?
try "socks 5" and port 3128 and be aware that it takes a moment until you get the connection.
i don't know if there is some thing like "net-misc/corkscrew" for windows. maybe it can be ported.

I was trying http type. Trying socks5 doesn't seem to work either.

Is it possible I'd need to change the listening port on my home machine?

unlikely though possible.
try either port 80 or 443.
or try to surf to a website on a non-standard-port like this
if that works it means the gateway of that network has no problem with non-standard ports.
try to find out if there is a alternative proxy (socks 5)
