I'm trying to install gentoo on my crappy old acer aspire laptor (celeron-m). For some reason it just keeps shuting down during the middle of kernel compilation so there are no error messages I can post or anything like that. I previously had it dual booted with windows and gentoo and never had this problem with the install before.

is it overheating?

most computers will just turn off after the cpu reaches a certain point.

Solution: New heatsink, or compile near a refrigerator.

you know I actually tried letting it compile inside the fridge right after I posted this and it worked...i was litterally rolling on the floor laughing...still its an issue that should have never happed as laptops are suppose to be usable OUTSIDE of the fridge. Never poked around inside of a laptop before...I think this tube AS5 should help.

cpufreq scaling should help... consider setting it up and throttling down by default.

It's funny - someone a while back was talking about how his laptop kept shutting down while compiling - he took it outside (it was winter still), and it worked fine.
