Hey,
I've looked over the forums and can't really find the info I need....

I have a box that will have two (and a couple more in the future) domains pointing to it... Right now it's running MailEnable on Windows, and when I convert it to Gentoo I need to keep the mail server. My problem is that I've never used a linux mail server... what's available? I need for users to connect with outlook express/macmail (pop3) and be able to send mail using the same clients (using smtp) - I don't want to have webmail. I do want to be able to have mailing lists. I also want invalid emails to be put in my mailbox...

so what would i use? thanks in advance...

Hey,

Well as far as I know there is 4 main MTAs - Sendmail,Postfix,Exim,Qmail

Everyone has there own fav. and I chose sendmail (flame coming :) )

Depends on how many users your have I would look into a LDAP sol. and just run it like that. As for POP/IMAP it will just slot in. The genral way that this is done under Linux is for the mail to be dropped into a store where the Client collects it - normally this store is under /var/spool/mailq (or something like that). For pop/imap I use uw-imap which works 100% for me !

I don't know about the other MTA's so I can't help you there....

read the gentoo "user guides" (odd place for this information, really, but it's there). basically, search this page for the keyword "mail" and those docs are pertaining to your inquiry: http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/docs.xml -- this particular one may be of help: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/virt-mail-howto.xml (explains courier-imap and postfix. i'm sure there's pop information to be found somewhere here too)
