|
|
Hi,
I'm running x86 Gentoo on an HP Pavilion dv9700t CTO, attempting to get my Intel ICH8 sound card to work. I followed the ALSA guide to set up ALSA, and then unmasked and installed ALSA 1.0.16, since ALSA 1.0.14, the current stable version, doesn't support the ICH8 cards. However, when I try to run alsamixer, I'm getting the error Code: | alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such |
There's one thing that I suspect could be the problem - while I was able to update alsa-utils, alsa-tools, alsa-oss, and alsa-lib to version 1.0.16, alsa-driver, which is in the kernel, probably wasn't updated - does anyone know how to update this?
Thanks in advance for the help!!

So update alsa-driver, or use a mercurial checkout. See wiki.
All the alsa package versions installed should be the same. |

I can't update alsa-driver, since it's built into the kernel, so I tried the wiki page you linked. I got up to the step where it says to compile the kernel with Code: | make clean bzImage modules modules_install | During that step, I got this error: Code: | sound/core/pcm_native.c:26:33: error: linux/pm_qos_params.h: No such file or directory
sound/core/pcm_native.c: In function 'snd_pcm_hw_params':
sound/core/pcm_native.c:446: error: implicit declaration of function 'pm_qos_remove_requirement'
sound/core/pcm_native.c:446: error: 'PM_QOS_CPU_DMA_LATENCY' undeclared (first use in this function)
sound/core/pcm_native.c:446: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
sound/core/pcm_native.c:446: error: for each function it appears in.)
sound/core/pcm_native.c:449: error: implicit declaration of function 'pm_qos_add_requirement'
sound/core/pcm_native.c: In function 'snd_pcm_hw_free':
sound/core/pcm_native.c:510: error: 'PM_QOS_CPU_DMA_LATENCY' undeclared (first use in this function)
make[2]: *** [sound/core/pcm_native.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [sound/core] Error 2
make: *** [sound] Error 2 |
Any ideas? |

Seems like a mismatch between the versions of kernel and kernel-headers. |

So how would I fix that? (I have no idea what I'm doing here, I'm using Gentoo for the first time)
EDIT: I seem to have fixed the ALSA issue, and alsamixer is loading fine now, but X is not working anymore - I'm getting "Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found) ".
EDIT: Nevermind, the ALSA issue is back as well.
EDIT: I got X working again, it was a problem with reemerging nvidia-drivers after recompiling the kernel. I don't have ALSA working, though.
EDIT: After messing around with it a bit more and installing the kernel modules again, I've got ALSA + X working. However, I still don't have sound from the speakers.
EDIT: Never mind, I just didn't have the volume turned up high enough. Thanks for the help, PaulBredBury! |
