|
|
Hi,
because I get pi***d of X and it's lacks of features (I know for networking it's perfect, but the average Desktop-User never use this), performance, etc. I searched a bit and found DirectFB. Just started emerge 2 minutes ago. But there are no ebuilds for the additional modules like GTK+-DirectFB and the nVidia, Matrox, ... drivers. Is there someone out who can build some?
I am not (yet) good enough in creating ebuilds and not familiar enough with DirectFB by myself.
I would be very pleased if someone could do such ebuilds, because I think DirectFB is a goos thing! _________________ Many greetings from Germany,

DFB isn't really usable at the moment, so you can't do much more than take a look at it. Gtk-DFB is quite neat but you can only run app and it's quite buggy.
Maybe you might be interested to look at XDirectFB though and there is a ebuild for it that worked for me. It's interesting stuff, works like a XServer but has alpha blending and starts in a splitsecond (it uses your framebuffer for display of course). Unfortunatly it crashed everytime when I tried to start a Gtk2 app. Gtk1 and others worked fine but my Desktop is almost completely Gnome 2 atm. I will keep an eye on this.
The most difficult part about DFB is to get your framebuffer up and running. If you already did that, than it's really not difficult to try the different apps. |

Actually you would be amazed by the number of people doing remote xsessions, give XDirectFB a try as Spark indicated. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

I know that many people use X over network (me too). But I think nearly nobody uses this in 'normal' desktop-environments. Here eye-candy has IMHO higher priority.
For now I'am just emerging XDirectFB.
Is it possible to run all X apps under XDirectFB? _________________ Many greetings from Germany,

Not sure on that one, I would read up on XDirectFB at the developer site. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

There is almost no info. I also didn't find more info anywhere else on the net.
But as I said, Gtk2 apps crash for me, I don't know why. Anything else worked. But be prepared that your framebuffer might not be as fast (if you only got VESA support) and it will be difficult to get high resolutions. I would really love to use this as an X replacement. Hopefully this will be possible some day. Using X only for OGL games. |
