I seem to have a strange issue with overlays here, I installed layman and then did :

Code:

wall rahul # layman --fetch
wall rahul # layman --list
* gentopia                  [Git       ] (source: git://git.overlays.gentoo....)
* gnome                     [Git       ] (source: git://git.overlays.gentoo....)
* graaff                    [Git       ] (source: http://moving-innovations....)
* kde                       [Git       ] (source: git://www2.mailstation.de/...)
* philantrop                [Git       ] (source: git://www2.mailstation.de/...)
* swegener                  [Rsync     ] (source: rsync://rsync.gentoo.steal...)
* welp                      [Git       ] (source: git://git.overlays.gentoo....)
* x11                       [Git       ] (source: git://git.overlays.gentoo....)

Where are the rest of the overlays, more specifically the desktop-effects overlay?

And if I try to add any overlay, I get the following error message:

Code:

wall rahul # layman --add x11
* Running command "/usr/bin/git clone "git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/proj/x11/" "/usr/portage/local/layman/x11""...
Initialized empty Git repository in /usr/portage/local/layman/x11/.git/
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly
fetch-pack from 'git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/proj/x11/' failed.
* Failed to add overlay "x11".
* Error was: Directory /usr/portage/local/layman/x11 does not exist. Cannot remove the overlay!

Any idea as to what is happening here?

OK, it seems to be a problem with git. git is not working! Strange, is it not?

Code:

wall rahul # git clone git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/proj/gnome.git
Initialized empty Git repository in /home/rahul/gnome/.git/
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly
fetch-pack from 'git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/proj/gnome.git' failed.

Actually, the error is changing, the new error is:

Code:
wall rahul # git clone git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/proj/gnome.git
Initialized empty Git repository in /home/rahul/gnome/.git/
fatal: read error (Connection reset by peer)
fetch-pack from 'git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/proj/gnome.git' failed.

Bumping an old thread I know, but can you tell us how you solved it? I'm wrestling with this issue right now and I can't see any solution :/

I myself do not know how it was solved, to be exact.

Of course you need to do a layman -L -k to list all the available overlays. However, I was not able to add any overlay and I have no idea why this was happening. As I said it solved itself over the night. However, do make sure that git and subversion are installed.
Sorry, that I could not be of any further help.

git.overlays.gentoo.org was not working yesterday. Had the same problems with openrc and desktop-effects overlays.
All overlays from other servers worked like a charm.

Today syncing from git.overlays.gentoo.org is working again.

Yeah, I noticed things are working again. At first I thought it was a problem with git, since all overlays worked except for those working with git. Apparently the problem was something else.

Anyway, thanks for your replies of course :)
