Hello!

When I try to connect to the work through VPN using a macbook, my whole home network dies. It gets back online after ~30s but then the VPN connection has been lost. Sometimes if I am lucky I can use VPN for over an hour and everything is just fine.

The network centers around a Netgear WNR3500.

Any idea what might be wrong?

What VPN are you using? Is it IPsec or SSL based? Is your Macbook running Gentoo? If not, how does Gentoo fit into this? How many systems are in the home network, and in what way does it die? For example, do all hosts become completely unable to communicate even with each other, or do you only lose access to the Internet?

Is your Netgear fully patched?

The MacBook is running OSX, but my desktop where I am writing this message on run gentoo, so does my server. The network stop working for both OSX and my gentoo desktop.

VPN is IPSec based, and my Netgear router has the latest firmware version. All hosts become unable to communicate with each other. My internet is a ADSL connection.

Based on your second post, the symptoms seem most consistent with your IPsec VPN crashing the Netgear device, thereby rendering all hosts which rely on it unable to communicate until it reboots. Can you temporarily use some other device as a router to confirm this? Is there any way to determine the uptime on your Netgear router?
