We need a little more info.

Did you install from a live-cd? Did the network work there? Which stage are you at? What does
Code:
cat /proc/pci
say? How about
Code:
lsmod
?

Yes, a little more info would help.

Did you compile the driver in the kernel config as a module or built in? The livecd might automatically load the required module for you, but when you build a new kernel yourself, you have to include it manually. If you don't know which driver to use, check what the livecd uses.

'lsmod' is a very useful command.

If you're using DHCP, make sure you can access the DHCP server. Sometimes when my router isn't functioning properly, it will fail to receive a DHCP lease, and in that case not bring eth0 up.

As I said, it's hard to help when one provides little info on what the problem might actually be.
