|
|
Hi,
i got a weird problem installing gentoo linux.
After booting with an basic livecd (1.4_rc4) without problems i prepared and mounted my partitions without problems.
But at the end of untarring the x86_stage1 tarball (the one on the cd) the process stops with a massive kernel error telling me that something about
KERNEL NULL DEREFERENCE
and about twenty lines of what looks like a memory image or stack code.
when i tried to install via a 1.4_rc3 livecd i get a segmentationfault when i try to chroot into the new environment.
I'm sure that this Problem is not Temperatur related, because i got a big zalman CPU-Cooler and several additional CaseFans installed.
My Hardware:
ECS K7S5A Mainboard
Athlon XP 2000+
256MB DDR Ram
40GB Maxtor HD
Its not my first Gentoo install and i already got a system running on that machine, but after playing around a little bit, i broke it.
I hope one of you can help me!

Could there be a bad memory module? |

Have you tried a different livecd? _________________ Where there's open source , there's a way. |

He said he tried 4 and 3... do you think he should keep on trying with that when it did work before for him? |

Try downloading a new stage... perhaps there's something weird with that... you could also try to untar stage 2 or 3, just to see if it works (wasn't saying to use those). |

D'Oh. Sorry. Deathwing00 is probably on the right track... and make sure you type the exact decompression command specified in the guide...
