when trying to play any video file or dvd, the video is painfully choppy. when monitoring usage with top, i see that an entire core is being maxxed and x has most of the load. if i use mplayer -vo gl2, everything is perfectly smooth... but one core is still used fully.

it appears that i'm getting no 2d rendering, but 3d rendering is working. glxgears returns almost 5000fps/5sec

i'm also experiencing issues with wine running civilization 4 (also, only using one core), but i think finding a solution to this 2d problem may give me what i need to fix the wine issue.

help!

Ok, that makes me think that something is messed up with your video card's X driver, since everything these days should be able to do xv. What kind of video card do you have, and what are the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and the video card device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

i just used the name "vesa" before installing the closed ati drivers, maybe i'll get around to changing it. the stuff that's left is what i thought would be pertinent. i did change a few of the settings: busid, bustype, added all of the options, uncommented the section "dri"

interestingly, enemy territory works well, but neverwinter nights fails to start.

Hmm, the ATI driver is ignoring most of the settings you added, but that should be ok... I don't see anything terribly wrong wtih your X config.

Did you compile mplayer with the xv use flag?

i just added xv to my use flags and emerge -N mplayer, but nothing has changed. any guesses as to what is happening? is there anything i can do to force the xorg settings to be used?

Well, I don't think those settings are even used anymore (eg, AGP doesn't apply because it's a PCI express card), or they might be named differently. *shrug*

You could try using "X -configure" (from a text console) to generate a new xorg.conf in your home directory, then try that out, just to see if it was something in there set weird.

here's something curious: if i change the driver to radeonhd or vesa (can only run 1024x768, native is 1280x800), videos play smoothly... but no direct rendering.

i'm not sure what i should be doing with "X -configure", couldn't i just run "xorgconfig"? i'm doubtful as to whether something is misconfigured, i think it has to be something to do with the closed ati drivers. strange enough, the drivers on ati's page that are listed as "specifically for" the hd 2x00 mobile cards won't install.

what X -configure does, is probes the attached video card(s) and autogenerates a new config file for you (I think it saves it by default as ~/xorg.conf.new), and then you can put that in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to try it out.

But, from what you're saying, it sounds like there's a bug in the ATI driver. Certainly not the first nor last of those :(

Maybe you can google for other people with that laptop or card, and see how they got it to work decently.

when i tried "X -configure" (i had to delete /tmp/.X0-lock to run it), the next instruction was to execute "X -config /root/xorg.conf.new". this went to the generic xserver, but i couldn't do anything, no terminals or windows of any sort. i switched back to terminal 1 and ctrl-c to shutdown the program... and when i checked terminal 7, the old x session was still running. might that have effected something?

i haven't found anyone running gentoo that has gotten this gpu to do everything that it should, but i plan to keep looking. the only people who have gotten everything to work (games, video, etc) have been running ubuntu - apparently, debian has the envy package. sabayon (which is what i'm using) is the only distro i've found that supports my adapter (it's emerged as madwifi-ng 9999, weird...). similarly, no one in the sabayon community has gotten everything to work. maybe i'm the only one with an asus f3ka-x2 that is bucking the windows standard by trying to play games and videos in linux? if i only wanted video playback, radeonhd would be fine.

thanks for your help, so far.

When it tells you to run "X -config /root/xorg.conf.new", it's easier to just back up your old /etc/X11/xorg.conf and move xorg.conf.new there, then restart your X server. If it doesn't work right, just put your old config back.
