I can't seem to get gdb to give me a back trace, I think cause the googleearth scripts do a lot of path defining and sed'ing.

Any matching entry in
1. /var/log/warn ?
2. /var/log/xorg.0.log ?

nothing in /var/log/xrg.0.log, files doesn't grow at all.
Ah ha! /var/log/everything/current: Code: | Apr 9 14:11:46 [kernel] NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 169.09, but

Looks like an nvdia driver upgrade snuck past me without changing the kernel module, time to downgrade I guess, thanks for the thought. _________________ Adopt an orphan |

octanez,
Err, nope. Stop Xorg, to remove the old module from memory
start Xorg to use the new driver. The new kernel module will be loaded too. _________________ Regards,

Thanks for the tip, I just don't feel like restarting X at the moment.
But you are right that is a better solution than masking nvidia-drivers-169.09-r1. _________________ Adopt an orphan |

I have the same error message using ati-drivers-8.471.3 on kernel 2.6.24-gentoo-r4 (x86_64). I've rebooted and still have the same problem. Any solution?
Thanks. |

nextgen,
You really get errors with //usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia... when you are using an ATI card ?
Code: | eselect opengl list | would be a good place to start. It should show you have ATI opengl in use. _________________ Regards,

You have a keen eye! Here's what I have:
Code: | $ eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] ati *
[2] xorg-x11 |
I cannot check right now if my error message contains "nvidia". That sure would be weird if it did. I'll check and will post back to confirm. |

nextgen,
You are using the fglrx ATI driver. Will googlearth run if you do Code: | eselect opengl set xorg-x11 | then restart Xorg.
3D will be incredibly slow as its all done in software now. Its possible googleearth will check for 3D hardware acceleration and fail if its not set.
I'm picking on your 3D implementation because all the other stuff is common for everyone.
Trying a different ati-driver is also worth testing. _________________ Regards,

I've switched to xorg-x11 and rebooted. Same problem...
Code: | $ eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] ati
[2] xorg-x11 *
$ googleearth
Google Earth has caught signal 11.
Stacktrace from glibc:
./googleearth-bin(__gxx_personality_v0+0x1e8) [0x8057fb4]
./googleearth-bin [0x8058399]
[0xffffe500]
We apologize for the inconvenience, but Google Earth has crashed.
This is a bug in the program, and should never happen under normal
circumstances. A bug report and debugging data are now being written
to this text file:
/home/jerome/.googleearth/crashlogs/crashlog-EB53C90C.txt
This bug report will be sent to Google automatically next time you run
Google Earth. Its data, which contains no personal information, will help
us correct problems without bothering you further. If you would rather
this info not be transmitted, please delete the above file before running
the program again. If you want bug reports to NEVER be sent, remove the
above 'crashlogs' directory's read/write permissions.

Looking forward to 3D support with radeonhd. |

I've switched back to ati opengl and I've rebooted with 2.6.23-gentoo-r3. Now googleearth works. I suppose this is the workaround for the time being.
Code: | $ eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] ati *
[2] xorg-x11
$ uname -r
2.6.23-gentoo-r3
$ googleearth
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

gx=0.210000, gy=0.710000, bx=0.149990, by=0.059990

Well... Time has past and I can't find anyone else complaining about not being able to run googleearth over kernel 2.6.24 (x86_64). I've even tried googleearth-4.3 in my portage overlay.
Is there anyone able to run googleearth in a setup such as this:

This is really embarassing, but I haven't had a working googleearth in almost 2 years now, spanning multiple system configurations over that time period. It always segfaults after the splash screen. The crashlog looks like:
Code: |
Major Version 5
Minor Version 1
Build Number 3509
Build Date Sep 17 2009
Build Time 15:19:56
OS Type 11
OS Major Version 2
OS Minor Version 6
OS Build Version 30
OS Patch Version 3
Crash Signal 11
Crash Time 1255645715
Up Time 6.77
Stacktrace from glibc:
./googleearth-bin[0x805caa6]
[0xffffe400]
|
I can provide emerge info details if needed. But in a nutshell:
amd64, sane make.conf, several ati-drivers, many kernels, every version of googleearth in portage. No qt4 useflag, but I think googleearth has its own anyway.
Original system was radeon 9700-based, but I've tried about every radeon family and ati-drivers in the book. Currently have 2 amd64 systems, both with Radeon 4550. One is a production system, and therefore a few months behind portage, with vanilla-sources-2.6.29.3 and a hacked ati-drivers ebuild based on 8.602. The second machine is up-to-date with the latest stable xorg-x11, gnome-light, vanilla-sources-2.6.30.3, and running ati-drivers-9.9-r2 and googleearth-5.1-3509.4636_beta.
And yes, I'm sure I'm running the fglrx driver correctly. I don't believe I have any fancy desktop effects running either
Code: |
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: ATI
|
How to tackle this?
1. Original problem was ati-drivers related. Something broke with the proprietary libGL.so.1.2 and we had to replace the binary with one from an older driver package. This *solved* the segfault problem on Radeon 9700. But since those drivers don't even support new hardware it's a moot point.
1a. Yes, I did check that my current libGL.so.1.2 isn't stale from an old driver. The timestamp was last updated early October this year. The old one dated from March 2007 and is a different size. /usr/lib32/libGL.so points to this new file:
Code: | 565172 Oct 2 19:31 /usr/lib32/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so.1.2 |
2. Is a new 32-bit mesa required? That's implied by this thread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-573351-highlight-googleearth.html
Surely someone out there must have googleearth working with ati-drivers. What's the secret? |

Never mind, I really did have a stale libGL.so.1.2 in my /opt/bin/googleearth directory.
Removing it solves my problem. |
