Hi, this is my first post on this forum, with my second attempt to install Gentoo on a (old) Compaq proliant 2500 server.
I have just created one boot partions and 3 others for a /dev/md0 device on wich the root system will get on. Because it is not yet possible to create a swap partion inside the /dev/md0(p1), i have created a swap-file instead.
While I have executed
I got the following on my screen:
Quote: | An update to partage is available. It is highly recommend that you update portage now, before any other packages are updated. Please do so and then update all of your configuration files. |
Because such event is not mentiond on the dutch installation guide, btw a job well done - there a far worser i have seen, i wonder:
Ok, how should i proceed to update the portage system then?
Or is it mandatory is should to this afterwards, when i have finisched the installation? Please let me know soon, cause i would like to go.
On remark on the sideline: in my stuped attempt to create partions inside the /dev/md0 device, I got the message that cfdisk and fdisk are using old ioctl's (something like that) from the md-software. And that they should be updated.[/b] |

I just ignored it and continued with the instructions as rewritten. I did not run into any problems and was able to update portage later.

i would do it this way:
if you start from stage 1, do the bootstrapping process first.
after bootstrapping you are at stage 2.
now type to install the newest version of portage. after that, do , to update your config files. i assume that you did not change any config files (except make.conf) up to now, so you simply can overwrite all these config files during the etc-update.
after that your portage system is up-to-date, and you can proceed as described in the installation guide. |

thanks guys!
Perhaps u should consider to make this a sticky note,
and/or adjust the installation manual at this point.
Since other topics reveal probelems when updating the portage while the installation is 'busy'. I hav discided to delay this while I it is more safe to do so. |

actualy, you don't have to update it.
it will update itself when you do emerge system. The reason it gives you that message is that the version of portage in the install cd you used is older then the newer one. however, when you emerge system, it will grab the latest version of every packadge.
Or in the worst case, when you are done installing and have rebooted, do a emerge -u world to get everything up to date. _________________ Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it.
