lcd screen split at the bottom. Ati mobility video.

I am setting up a hp Omnibook 4150B and have run into a problem with xfree and the ati rage mobility video. I get xfree to start up, but the screen is split about 1" from the bottom. This one inch portion looks like the top of the screen. I have tried every ati driver in xf86config and the one's that work all create the same effect. I remember long ago having the same problem with an omnibook 7100 and slackware. My guess is I have a kernel option mixed up, but for the life of me I don't know where to start looking. This laptop works fine with knoppix and morphix. The XF86Config files appear to have the same video options set as with my gentoo setup. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
