large number of wakeups with 2.6.24-r9

after installing gentoo on a dual core sony vaio (VGN-SZ model) this weekend, i am getting a huge number of wakeups (>500, getting to 20k at times); and one CPU core seems to always run at full speed, eating battery. killing one CPU core decreases the number of interrupts and increases average sleep time a lot.

has anyone experienced this problem? if so, is there any soluton outside of shutting one core down?
