I've downloaded and run the gentoo 3stage liveCD.

When I boot I use the dopcmcia switch, and the kernel loads, I get two nice beeps, two lines down I get a remark about eth0 looking for my DHCP server, and then a command prompt.

ifconfig shows only LO
lspci shows the two PCMCIA slots
cardctl status shows me the device is plugged in and recognizable
when I enter "modprobe pcnet_cs" it doesn't complain or give feedback

The card is "live" as far as my router/hub is concerned

If I forget to do dopcmcia it does complain that there is no ethernet and the hub doesn't link

I've tried the gentoo kernel, the acpi kernel, (someone on another post even mentioned the smp kernel so I tried it anyway)

If I pop out the card, cardmgr complains that there was an infinite loop

If I shutdown, cardmgr complains that it was not able to configure the card

I greped a status file (forgot which one) and it showed that indeed the card was there. It even reads off the MAC address to me.

I hope this is enough starting info for someone to clue me in.

Thanks

Interesting issue. The card was live all the time. For some reason the card was down, DHCP did not want to find my router, and IPv6 was configured instead of IPv4.

Needless to say it works.

When my card can't reach the network, or the router is down, I see an IPv6 address chosen in ifconfig at times, too. I do find this strange, but it seems to only happen with the livecd.

Changing to manual settings seems to work nicely :)

Sometimes I really don't like DHCP (especially when it's not working too well).
