pdfedit is good for simple text and graphical editing.
It is available in portage

Caveat: It's not fancy.
PDFs are not meant for substantial editing after they are published
The software acknowledges this fact in its wiki and works within that limitation

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like, as the OP mentioned that he has a tablet, he meant "annotations" as in digital "ink annotations" where you can mark up documents freehand.

That being said, I'm not familiar with the options for that on Linux.

Oops, you're right.
I'm sorry I didn't read the post carefully.

Maybe you could have a marked up document with pdftools and then <Alt>+<Tab> from the original :)

Xournal is the best there is, just be carefull not to load PDFs with several hundred pages because xournal currently keeps every page uncompressed in the RAM which adds up quickly.

jarnal can also do it and adds a few features (collaboration over network..) but it's java (ugly) and really slow (a'lot of disk access).

Other then that, KDE's new pdf-viewer okular is currently getting some annotation features but afaik its not there yet.

Is there anything you don't like about xournal, or why did you ask?

No, theres nothing, its just im not finished with setting gentoo up on the new box and i read some articles about xournal and the branches of the project. i just wanted to gather a few opinions if one of the branches might be better than the main project etc. i just didnt want to install like 7 programms and then remove them again ^^. so i asked if ppl made some experiences with the progs.

I am unable to find pdfedit or xournal in portage. Have they been substituted by another programme?

Thanks!

Code:
zoni@Set ~ $ eix pdfedit
* app-text/pdfedit [1]
     Available versions:  ~0.4.1
     Homepage:            http://pdfedit.petricek.net/
     Description:         Editor for manipulating PDF documents. GUI and commandline interface.

[1] "sunrise" /usr/portage/local/layman/sunrise
zoni@Set ~ $ eix xournal
* app-text/xournal
     Available versions:  ~0.4.2.1 {debug doc pdf}
     Homepage:            http://xournal.sourceforge.net/
     Description:         Xournal is an application for notetaking, sketching, and keeping a journal using a stylus.

So xournal is in the portage tree, pdfedit is available through the sunrise overlay.

Zoni, thanks very much for the answer. I am unable to find xournal in portage. I have even updated the portage tree (emerge --sync), and eix gives me:
Code:
# eix xournal
No matches found.

I have started to edit the pdf files with inkscape, and the tip about the sunrise overlay is very useful. Thanks!

Cheers!

You probably forgot to update the eix cache after syncing the portage tree with emerge. update-eix will do this.
And yes, the sunrise overlay has interesting things that haven't reached the portage tree yet sometimes :) You're very welcome.
