I've just had to switch mail to my backup, which is Gentoo of course (unlike the failed primary server, which was a mutated Red Hat) and am wondering (quite late at night) why I can't get courier to POP.
The error I get in mail.log is:
Jul 21 01:55:38 free pop3d: LOGIN, user=whit, ip=[xxx.xx.xxx.xx]
Jul 21 01:55:38 free pop3d: pop3d: No such file or directory
Jul 21 01:55:41 free pop3d: LOGOUT, user=whit, ip=[xxx.xx.xxx.xx], top=0, retr=0
(The box is named is "free.") What does the "pop3d: pop3d:" line mean? What file is being looked for where?
In /etc/courier-imap/pop3d I have at the end:
#Hardwire a value for ${MAILDIR}
#MAILDIR=.maildir
MAILDIR=/var/spool/mail/
- Reflecting my system being set up for mbox, not .maildir style mail. There is new mail in /var/spool/mail/whit - obviously I haven't succeeded in setting courier to look there. What's the (doubtlessly simple) trick? Getting rid of that last line and restarting isn't it, either.
Thanks! |

AFAICT, although Courier can deliver to MBOXes, Courier imapd/pop3d only supports Maildirs.
UW Imapd handles MBOXes. _________________ Cheers,

Now all I have to do is figure out why emerging uw-imap doesn't put anything obvious is /etc/init.d by way of a file to start it. (Having lost a half-year's mail to a corrupted maildir setup in the past, I'm just not motivated to find out if it's since become as dependable as a file. Okay, the bad experience was using Applix - maybe the lesson should just be to avoid commercial software?) |
