Hello there!

Since some days my Gentoo box started to hard freeze at random moments when I'm working and I really can't understand why. First I thought about a RAM problem, but I performed Memtest and everything seems ok; then I tried fsck to check for problems on my disk, but that didn't help.

What should I try now? Has anyone got some suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I don't think so, it happens even when I just turned on my PC and I never had this kind of problem. Other ideas?

What kinds of things are you running? A desktop environment? Compiz? What kernel version are you running, and with which CFLAGS was your system compiled? What is your hardware like? A couple of useful commands to see the output from would be emerge --info and lspci.

emerge --info

contents of /etc/portage/*

overlay(s)

kernel source / config

does this happen when X isn't running?

Any predictability?

OTHERS INFOS
Kernel: 2.6.22-gentoo-r9 since a lot, but the problems are recent.
Desktop environment: XFCE 4.4.2
Hardware: AMD64
Predictability: I got the problem only when I was running X, but since I run X most of the time I don't know if this info is valuable.

Memtest will only tell you that your ram is bad. I have had machines fail for the first time 72 hours into a run.

What video driver are you using?

You may want to exit out of X windows completly and rebuild gcc and glibc and see if it locks up doing that. Also run the mprime torture test.

What is the "mprime torture test"?
What's its purpose?
And how do you run it?

It is sci-mathematics/gimps

It computes mersenne prime numbers. And using the torture tests will exercise the CPU and memory very highly. During this processing the application can detect calculation errors so that if you do get an error it usually means that the hardware is the cause. As a result this program is one of the most used applications to test for system stability especially for overclockers.

I'm using Nvidia Drivers, since I've got a Geforce 62000TC; my Gentoo installation is quite old, so I don't think it's a problem related to gcc/glibc, but I'll give it a try.

As for the mprime torture test, I'll get some documentation about it :)

I did not mean the problem was related to glibc or gcc but what I meant is if you have a bad cpu or memory compiling either of these take forever and there is a good chance they will segfault on bad hardware.

Nice suggestion, I'll give it a try this evening

Also if you do that disable ccache and distcc if you have either of these running because these will defeat the purpose...
