Initially I posted here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-688588.html but this forum is a better suited place I guess.

Rewrap of the problem: Since yesterday my file/web/media server (gentoo) has been acting up. When unrarring / unzipping an archive (no matter the size), the unarchiving will halt at some point, the load will rise and rise and rise and the machine locks up. I found out it is an ata-problem. I have 4 s-ata discs of which 3 are in an LVM2 volume group.

Snaps from /var/log/messages:

Code:

Would this be a hardware failure? The kernel itself (2.6.18-ck1) dates back to september '06 I think, so I doubt it's a problem in there. The chipset is an RS480(M).
