I'm just wondering why Unix Domain Socket and Packet Socket are not enabled by default in the gentoo-sources 2.4.24-gentoo-r4 kernel. I've built about 15 Gentoo boxes over the past 4 years or so and I've never had so much trouble figuring out why the machine wouldn't mount the root filesystem after installing.

I talked someone into trying Gentoo and they're quite disgusted w/ it after having compiled the kernel 20 times and not having a working system.

Was there a reason this was turned off by default? The description states that unless you're compiling for an embedded system then it should definitely be enabled.

He was about to slap XP back on it before I got my hands on it.

d_logan,

Its a bug. 2.6.24 does not pick up the default config on x86, so lots of other useful stuff, like PCI Bus Support is also off.

This is not the fault of any Gentoo devs.

The default configuration (make defconfig) in recent kernels from kernel.org has a lot less stuff selected than in previous kernels.
