PostPosted: Tue Apr 22, 2008 4:15 pm    Post subject: System can't schedule hdd i/o and network i/o -> high loa Reply with quote

I don't know if this is normal under linux (I hope not), but my kernel can't schedule disk i/o properly. Before I got a new computer the cpu was the limiting factor since it had to enrcypt the drive, and I could only write with 14mb/s. So I never encountered my present problem. Now I can tranfser with about 30-60mb/s but my system is even slower.

This occurs for example if I simply copy files from one partition to the other or merge media files into a matroska container with mmg. This makes my system totaly inresponsive. Everything, typing in a console, opening an application, watching a movie, stops working or reacts only after 5-60s. I suppose all these things require minimal hdd i/o but don't get it and have to wait. Also load increases to 5-7. CPU load is minimal, so its not it.

A similar thing happens when I transfer data over LAN with 4-9mb/s, but the freezes are much shorter. The movies I watch simply freeze for 0.5-2s.

So I am wondering what I can do to change this. It is really annoying to have to sit and wait when I copy large files or create mkv's.

My system (should be fast enough):
  • Intel Q9300 (4x2,5ghz)
  • 4gb RAM
  • Asus P5K-E Wifi-AP Mainboard with Intel P35/ICH9R
  • and Marvel 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit LAN Controller (sky2)

For hdd access I use kernel's "AHCI SATA support" (CONFIG_SATA_AHCI) and "JMicron PATA support" (CONFIG_PATA_JMICRON). For the network card I compiled "SysKonnect Yukon2 support" (CONFIG_SKY2).
Complete kernel configuration

Thank you for your time reading this.
