Hi,

I play CS under Windows. After recently installing Gentoo, I want to be able to ditch Windows. I know that CS won't run by itself on Linux, so what does the collective recomend as the best method of playing CS on Linux?

Wine? WineX? Something else?

All advice gratefully received!

I have to say that Gentoo is a great distro! After trying RH, Mandrake, SuSe and Debian, Gentoo is the only one I want to stick with.

Cheers

I use WineX, but some people say they get better FPS with Wine... I guess you'll have to try both...

I use Wine. Never really noticed a difference between either, just like to use the version that is absolutely free (read - no parts kept out for subscription). In the past I have used both depending on the support I needed, but right now it's all Wine.

Dont't use the guide on lhl.linuxgames.com. Instead, you can do this(as root):

Code:
$ emerge wine

then run wine once(as user) and it will create config files(you'll probably have to change a few things in ~/.wine/config), fake registry and such:

Code:
# wine

now you can either copy your entire Half-Life directory over or reinstall everything with wine (first one is obviously easier) and then run CS like so:

Code:
# wine -- hl -console -game cstrike
or with any other cmd-line options you used in windows, but I think -console is neccessary.

i have that REAL lame problem with wine/cs.
i have retail Counter-strike, after i install it then update it to 1.5 flowlessly the problem starts...
wine cstrike.exe will show up the cdkey dialog and after i enter it and press enter the screen goes black then shows some weird image with weird colors and the computer totally locks up.
my specs :
nvidia geforce4 mx440
kernel 2.5.74-mm3 (tried with 2.5.73-mm2)
gcc-3.3 (w/o the hammer patch)
wine (and made sure i did opengl-update nvidia before i emerge it)

this problem is very odd because i can run UT2003 demo (windows version) on wine w/o any problems at all.

ps: same CS problem happens with gta2 and gta3, it might be d3d problem? how can i start CS in opengl/software mode directly from the command line?

TIA
peace

I play Half-Life Team Fortress with WineX, but plain wine works as well.
WineX aloows me to use 5 Mousebuttons, which I need for my key-config.

But I didn't get wine + HL running with 5 mouse buttons. Did anybody manage that?

Another glitch:

I'd like to use Cheating Death client with HL, which won't install with winex. i managed to install CD with wine, but the servers don't recognize ist running besides HL.
Any suggestions?

OneofOne-

Don't know about the computer lockup, but their is a known issue with gl.h that is included with xfree 4.3. If you look at www.winehq.com -> go to the bugzilla and look at bug #1396 (I think) it will tell you how to fix the messed up textures.

Dscherrieth-

I know that the older versions of CD didn't work correctly, with linux, but I believe they have it fixed? I know that I had been able to use CD with HL in the not too distant past.

@Schwin97: You're right, I just checked with CD 4.0 and it works with wine and HL.

But I still can't use MOUSE4 and MOUSE5 in Half-Life, although they work with X and in winex+HL as well.

I'm using an Intellimouse Optical on PS/2 port.

.xinitrc
Code:

exec /usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5" &

Are you running X in 16-bit color mode? I think CS requires this.

if I start Cheating-death with wine and HL with winex3, it doesn't work. you get kicked from the server because of cd not running.

i can play single player hl totally fine...but i can't connect to any cs or dod servers. very frustrating!!! don't get me wrong, half-life is a great game, but i really really really want to play some cs and dod.

thanks to anyone who knows how to fix it...this is the only output i'm getting:

Code:
wine: Unhandled exception (thread 0009), starting debugger...

I compiled the latest version of wine from cvs (pulled today) and I am getting stuck on the "Loading" screen...

Time to check wineHQ

wow, i always thought that the forums were a nice place for gathering information and not being attacked. in answer to your somewhat rudely phrased question, i did search, but i must've not entered the correct keywords. it happens. grow up.

edit: also, if you're referring to the post that was mentioned by shira, all you'd have to do is look at the dates to know that i posted first.
