Is there any real advantage of quard (4) core CPU now in Gentoo?
Is it better than dual-core?
Or maybe at all that multicore stuff is useless? Just power consumption for nothing?
Please do not talk about the latest games here. Just Gentoo desktop system and Linux kernel. |

For a non-gaming Gentoo desktop system on Linux, the advantages of 4 cores over 2 are the same as with a non-gaming Windows machine. It depends on use. Will you be encoding video? Will you run multiple CPU-intensive tasks?
Assuming you'll be emerge'ing packages normally, such that they are compiled with gcc: Quad core vs similarly priced (and therefore higher clocked) dual core is an interesting question. |

I have a Q6600 (the cheapest quad from Intel) and it is super fast in compiling ... well, as long as the package support parallel compiling, I have to set -j17 to max out the cpu during compilation. |

I too have a Q6600 and while the individual core speed might not be as high as on some of the C2D processors, it's better for compiling. And in gentoo, there's a lot of compiling.....
But it's also pretty good for gaming, provided you have a somewhat recent video card.
I guess it just depends on what you plan on doing the most of. If you do a lot of heavy multitasking, the C2Q might be a better option. Plus, it's pretty cheap now. |

Compiling can be much faster on a quad core. I managed to compile openoffice in 45 minutes for example. The kernel in just over 1 minute. Also video rendering uses all 4 cores. So I am happy with my Q6600.

IIRC, doesn't the kernel force -j1? |

In fact, this formule is the right one, there no need to increase the -j to value belong the number of cores. |
