So I am trying to install gentoo on my laptop from my desktop. Both computers currently have windows XP on them. This may sound noob but I can not figure out how to get the install to start. I've had some other conversations about it but i've heard a lot of different things and im really just lost at this point in time. What do I need to do on the laptop to connect to the shared cd drive and get it to install? Thanks in advance as im really looking forward to using gentoo the lack of cd rom is just throwing me a curve early. |

If this is your first time installing Gentoo, I would recommend doing a practise installation on your other computer (the one with a CD drive), so that you can get a feel for how the (manual) installation works.
After that, you should be ready to tackle the fancy stuff needed for a CD-less installation :
Booting Gentoo (or some other distro) from a USB stick
PXE (booting over the network)
Harddrive transplant

Ha Ha might see if one of my friends has an extra comp that I could try it on. I wouldn't want to try it on my desktop cause while I mainly use it for gaming and web browsing I do do some work on it and dont want to risk messing anything up. Good advice though. |
