so, the hard drive in my laptop is no longer able to boot. i found that if i put it into a USB hard drive case, i can read the data from the windows partition of the drive if i plug it into a computer running windows, but i can't read the reiserfs-formatted gentoo partition. does anyone know how i can go about recovering the data? would it show up if i plugged it into a computer running linux?

It should. You may have to mount it manually, but I don't see why it wouldn't mount, unless it's complete toast.
