|

gdm always seems to fail the first time that I login. On the second attempt, it succeeds and I happily use X until the next time I reboot/login.
In /var/log/messages, I see this:
Quote: | May 6 10:32:43 localhost gdm[3210]: pam_unix(gdm:session): session opened for user kurtg by (uid=0)
May 6 10:32:43 localhost gdm[3209]: WARNING: gdm_cleanup_children: child 3210 crashed of signal 6
May 6 10:32:43 localhost gdm[3209]: WARNING: gdm_cleanup_children: Slave crashed, killing its children

I checked around the rest of the logs, but I didn't see anything else amiss.

I did some cleaning up and rebuilt my entire system. Problem went away. There must be some things that revdep-rebuild doesn't catch.

Careful with '--depclean'. It will delete everything but you're most recent kernel whether you're using that kernel or not. I hadn't updated the the latest kernel, and I've been propagating some older patches between kernels, so I needed to reconstruct those changes. In my case, no biggie, but I can imagine it could be painful if you had larger amounts of work. |
