I have tried many many things to get this working, but I won't list them all here.

The hardware is , from lspci -n:
00:05.0 0403: 10de:03f0 (rev a2)
aka
nVidia Corp MCP61 High Def Audio

Basically alsamixer works and speaker-test works, but CLI utils like mpg321 get aolib: no default device available.

aplay fails. After trying stable and ~x86, and modules and in-kernel, and kernel and alsa-driver, and patching patch_realtek.c as indicated by some random Internet post, I'd decided that kernel 2.6-24-r5 and alsa 1.0.16 (and earlier) simply don't support this, but....

I booted from ubuntu and the sound works perfectly, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic (?) and alsa 1.0.15!

So it should be possible, however, as we know, ubuntu is module-crazy, especially the livecd, so it's a mess trying to figure it all out. There's nothing I can find in the /etc directory that refers to hda_intel at all really, so I'm stuck.

Can anyone help me out please? ESPECIALLY anyone who has a 10de:03f0 (rev a2) of their own!

Run alsaconf, update-modules -f, and /etc/init.d/alsasound restart

See on the left there, where it says "N00b"?

alsasound wasn't started.

When I first set up Gentoo it had to take me ten hours to get ALSA Working, that script being one of the primary reasons.
