Hi,

i have just installed the kernel 2.6.25.r2 hoping to overcome the problems of the 2.6.24 series and decreased performance... (Currently i am using 2.6.22-r9 since this was the kernel with the greater performance i had got).

After configuring the new kernel and boot from it, it stops in the boot screen after the message:

Code:
Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ 4 ports, IRQ sharing disabled

If i load the config file from my 2.6.22.r9 kernel, then the 2.6.25 kernel boots fine. But i don't think that this is a good tactic. I had changed some options of the ata/sata devices (my laptop has sata drive and sata dvd) but nothing happened.

Where could be the problem? I checked that everything that was enabled in the previous kernel is loaded in the new too. So, i think that something new that is enabled causes the problem...

Any ideas???

Thanks! :)

First, did you run make oldconfig when you moved the .config from your old kernel? If not, clear out the 2.6.25 source by running make mrproper. Copy the old .config file into the 2.6.25 source and run make oldconfig. Answer the questions as they come up. I tend to answer no to most of them. Once make oldconfig is done, then make xconfig or make menuconfig to tweak the settings.

If you are looking for a performance boost, you're not going to get it. 2.6.25 is just as sluggish as the .23 and .24 families. On the bright side, .25 version kernels support ndiswrapper more reliably than anything since the last .22 version kernel. On the not-so-bright side, I think they've stopped development on the .22 kernels.

Bummer!

Blessed be!
Pappy

Thanks pappy_mcfae!

I followed the directions you mentioned and i can now run the kernel. The thing is PERFORMANCE...

I am still using the .22-r9 because no other kernel was good enough. All had problems. You said that they stopped the development on the .22 kernels. WHY???

Is anyone happy with the .23, .24 and now .25?

Are you still using the .22 kernels?

I have very bad performance for all newer kernels. It is really obvious when compiling, the screen does not refresh smoothly... Responsiveness is also worse. Do you experience such issues? Any ideas of how to solve them?

Many thanks! :)

I think the fact that they had three different families in development was one of the deciding factors. That's just a guess on my part. I'd think they'd be interested in keeping a kernel that has as few problems as the .22 family.

Time marches on, and the .22 kernel has apparently fallen enough out of favor that no one misses it's passing...no one but me, and those who like functional ndiswrapper support.

I am sure there are, but as I peruse the forums, I see a lot of people falling into difficulties after upgrading to .23 and .24 kernels. The .25 family seems to be headed back in the right direction as far as wireless support is concerned. There are still some problems, such as time delays in connecting, and sometimes errant IP routing tables. But for the most part, .25 at least seems to be a lot better at working with ndiswrapper and wpa_supplicant than any of it's post .22 predecessors.

I am currently keeping the latest gentoo-source kernel set up as an experimental test bed. As soon as the wireless functionality with .25 and ndiswrapper is as good as it is with .22, I'm going move up to that version. I am waiting until that point because the alsa drivers in the .25 kernel are the same as the ones in the .24. Frankly, they suck, especially if you have an Intel HDA sound chip. I won't move up on this machine until the kernel version in question is so superior to the .22, that I have no choice but to change.

Yes. All three of my machines have the latest vanilla-sources (2.6.22.19) and gentoo-sources (2.6.22-r10) set up and ready to run. I just choose which one I want to use at boot time, and there I am. Only my experimental system has the .25 on it. Like I said, wireless support is getting better. I think there's a lot of room for improvement.

Yes, once again, you are not alone. It appears that if a system exists on the cusp between PIII and PIV, kernel versions can have a direct and sometimes dire effect on performance. Unfortunately, the .25 kernel falls into this category. If you have a system that's more than a year or so old, it would be advisable to stick with the .22 if performance is an issue. The good thing is that my experimental system likes the .25 versions better than it did the .23 or .24, so there is hope.

Blessed be!
Pappy
