Hi, I recently upgraded my kernel to 2.6.24-r4 and now my sound doesn't work. When I login to KDE I get this error message:
Code:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Function not implemented)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

This time I decided to reconfigure the kernel from scratch instead of doing make oldconfig because I had all kinds of options set that I didn't need. I suspect I've missed something in the kernel config somewhere.

dmesg
Code:
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:0e.1 to 64
hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC882, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
ALSA device list:
  #0: HDA NVidia at 0xfe020000 irq 20
TCP cubic registered
NET: Registered protocol family 1

kernel config

lspci -nnv
Code:
00:0e.1 Audio device [0403]: nVidia Corporation MCP55 High Definition Audio [10de:0371] (rev a2)
Subsystem: nVidia Corporation MCP55 High Definition Audio [10de:0371]
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 20
        Memory at fe020000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2
        Capabilities: [50] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask+ 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
        Capabilities: [6c] HyperTransport: MSI Mapping Enable+ Fixed+
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel

Any ideas?

Procedure of kernel upgrade?

1. Have you reused the old kernel config with: make oldconfig?
2. Then checked the new kernel config with make xconfig or make menuconfig
