I'm trying to make my Atheros Wifi card working. I don't have a network connection on Gentoo.
I managed to download and install (not emerge!!) wireless-tools.
Then i tried to do the same with madwifi. I downloaded it, but while doing "make":
"/lib/modules/2.6.24-gentoo-r5/build is missing. please set KERNELPATH. Stop."

I guess i don't have a kernel sources. The trouble is i don't know how to get them since i can't emerge them.
I downloaded linux-2.6.24.2 via M$, moved it into /usr/src/, "make all", "make modules_install" "make install" and then i got stuck cause I don't know what to do now... :/
I made a gentoo installation just a few days ago with a 2008.0_beta2.

PS. I managed to turn on my Wireless card (by making "make" for wireless tools and madwifi) on my previous gentoo installation, but i actually had kernel sources...
I'm not familiar with grub(actually it's first time when i'm using it; i used to run lilo)
PS2 I don't have genkernel.

Any help would be appreciated.

u need some kernel sources at the minimum to do what u want to do madwifi-ng compiles against the kernel sources, run emerge -f gentoo-sources and note down the addys it trys to get the bits from or emerge -f gentoo-sources > /root/kernel.txt ( it pipes the info to a txt file ;) ), and go a mates house or sumat and get em, or if u used the livecd and its got some kernel sources copy them to usr/src, u must have had the net to get the bits to start the install and to write this msg so use that to get the kernel sources ;) or try a livecd and set the nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf and set the gateway ( ifconfig (interface) (ip) gw (gateways ip) up ) think its that anyways, good luck :)

Allright - I'm under gentoo now ;)

First of all - I managed to download gentoo sources manually(with M$), put them in /usr/src/.
I also had to do make this symbolic link (cause i didn't have it before):
/lib/modules/2.6.24-gentoo-r5/build
(it should point to your sources in /usr/src/).

Then I finally managed to compile madwifi. But there was a fatal error while doing: modprobe ath_pci.
It happened because the kernel sources were: 2.6.24.2 (without gentoo patches) and i was still runing a 2.6.24-gentoo-r5 kernel. modprobe --force ath_pci didn't bring any results.
I had to switch to the new kernel. I had some troubles while doing it, but I eventually just downloaded manually genkernel (yeah, sometimes it's inevitable) and it works. Now I'll probably emerge madwifi to have it installed correctly and hope everything will be allright.
