Hi,
I'm trying to install some sort of x server: either x-org or xfree, and would like a minimalist but powerful wm such as fluxbox( i don't want any desktop manager). but then i heard about xgl which is an opengl-based x server and it's quite nice. my question is: will i be able to use fluxbox+xgl? or it requires DM such as gnome or kde?
if i were to not use xgl, which of the two(x org and xfree) is better? what do most of you guys use?
thanks |

Fluxbox + XGL... no you can't:
http://fluxbox-wiki.org/index.php/FAQ#Can_I_use_fluxbox_or_parts_of_it_with_XGL.2FCompiz.2FBeryl.3F
Xfree86 or Xorg... everyone uses Xorg now, Xfree86 is not longer maintained and not even in portage anymore (as far as I can tell).
Here's a hint for finding answers on gentoo forums (there's a lot of them):
In google type: Code: | site:forums.gentoo.org WHAT YOU'RE SEARCHING FOR |
That will help you find things a lot easier than gentoo's quick search, and it's a lot faster than waiting for someone to answer your question, too

thanks for the tip.
so do many people here use xgl? and i guess xgl+compiz should be enough right? and i mean i don't need any kde or gnome or any other DEs...
is compiz as good as fluxbox? |
