Is it in portage? or do I have to enable an overlay? I only see 4.04. |

4.0.5 is in portage.
4.1 will enter portage with the final release, no betas. |

There is an overlay that has been around for sometime and there is a newer overlay as well. I have been using the older overlay for a while now and have 4.1 beta 1 (4.0.81) installed on my machine. Search the forums for KDE4 and you will find info on the overlays.
I also have 4.0.4 installed. There is no comparison. 4.0.4 is a pain - unstable and missing many features - and I could not live with it. But I am using 4.1 beta 1 as my daily driver right now. It still has it's issues. But it is beta software so some of this is expected and all of the things I have run into are minor. So if you want to give "KDE4" a try avoid 4.0.x and use one of the KDE svn overlays and get a look at what 4.1 will be like. It is still not as feature rich as KDE 3.5 but it is far enough along that current svn is very usable and you will get a feel for where the developers are headed. Also I suspect that the nest times to get an svn version are right after the KDE folks have rolled a release and since beta 2 was just released this is a good time since the svn code will be more or less beta 2. |

There is a kde4.1 overlay but you have to use paludis instead of portage to make use of it, which kept me from trying it so far.
And as far as I could gather, the big points of KDE4 are QT4 and Plasma.
Plasma (you have to click on "Plasma (KDE)", as for some strange reason I couldn't link to the article directly :/) wrote: |
Plasma is a fundamental rewrite of several desktop interaction technologies included in the KDE desktop environment for Linux and other Unix-like systems. It most notably replaces the previous KDesktop shell, Kicker taskbar and SuperKaramba widget engine used in the KDE 3 series with a unified workspace for KDE 4. Plasma also provides a resolution-independent interface for KDE, making the desktop look identical almost regardless of screen size or resolution. Plasma's applets are collectively called plasmoids, but range from informative widgets to mini-applications like calculators and dictionaries. An important feature of Plasma is that there is no longer a distinction between panels, like the taskbar, desktop icons and widgets; they are created the same way.
Plasma separates components into "data engines" and their visualization counterparts. This is intended to reduce the total programming effort when there are multiple possible visualizations of given data; and to make it easier for the data engine and its visualizations to be written independently. The planned replacement for KMenu in later versions of KDE 4, called Raptor, will make extensive use of this. |
And QT4 is a Cross-Platform Application Framework so it will allow to use the same application on different environments, which will be very interesting for corporate users. Just think of akonadi for example.
Personally I use KDE-4.0.x for a couple of months now - and yes it is not nearly ready yet, it lacks a lot of configuration options and acts sometimes a little strange. But I like to watch it grow and I do enjoy to have something new to play with. The work that needs to be done with my box works without a hassle since the desktop itself is fast and stable, at least for me. |

You can add it with layman. It has ebuilds for 4.1-beta1 as well |

It's lightning fast compared to 4.0.5 (but still can't really compare to e17, but then I enabled desktop effects for fun so that could be the reason), but not quite that stable yet. It compiled fine on my x86_64 system, on my x86 notebook just systemsettings failed. Somehow my notebook isn't in a good shape anyway, lately, with firefox, opera and e17 failing regularly... |

Yesterday I saw a presentation about kde 4.devel/4.1 (snapshot was 4 hours old)
and even as a gnome user I have to admit
kde 4 is the way to go
i am impressed
there are so many improvements
plasma is just great
folderview is damn useful
one can really feel that usability experts were working hard to get things right
the feature that configuration belongs to the ui and not to a configuration dialog/control center
dolphin is really nice, far better than the konqueror as a filemanager
kwin has some really nice features too
as soon as kde 4.1 hits unstable i will drop gnome for sure
because everything i dislike in kde 3.5.9 is fixed in kde 4.1 |

++
kde 4.2 will be even better
if you have the possibility, try out the kdesvn packages
