Simple. I have Intel Core2 Quad processor, and I don't know which arch should I take - x86 (that displays all windows scripts) or amd64 (as it is on gentoo.org).
Which one? _________________ CPU: Intel Core2 Quad 6600; MB: MSI P35 Neo2-FIR; RAM: 4Gb DDR2 667; GPU: Gigabyte GeForce 6600GT; Snd: Sound Blaster Live! 5.1; Sys: Winshit XP, Gentoo x86 |

Depends on what you want to do, both will work, but it's a balance
X86 will be slower for heavily mathematical tasks but all your firefox plugins will work and you'll have more and newer ebuilds in portage. AMD64 is also a little bit harder to install. |

Another consideration is how much RAM you have.
For 3GB or less, x86 and amd64 will run about the same.
For more than that, a 64bit operating system has a big advantage. |

Even with the 64bit operating system, you can use the x86_64 kernel and everything should work just as well, if not better than a pure 32 bit environment.
Of course, as amd64 is still not completely as mainstream as x86 is, there's a couple workarounds in getting some apps to run as they should (namely Firefox).
That's what the forums are here for though =P

I have 4Gb of RAM and I already have had amd64 gentoo... (on previous computer)
and there's only i686 and amd64 2008.0_beta2 LiveCD
Thanks for help.
Ahh, and I got one question. What will happen, if I run old gentoo (2006.0, its kernel was for Athlon 64 processor) on quadcore computer? Malfunction, kernel panic, or worse? xD _________________ CPU: Intel Core2 Quad 6600; MB: MSI P35 Neo2-FIR; RAM: 4Gb DDR2 667; GPU: Gigabyte GeForce 6600GT; Snd: Sound Blaster Live! 5.1; Sys: Winshit XP, Gentoo x86 |

That would depend on how much it is optimized for the athlon arch... IIRC the kernel does only mtune optimization, thus it could work. Provided that all other modules are available (thinking mainly of jmicron sata controller...)
and there could be the problem of only having one single core, as smp is missing.
cheers

The chances that you'll cause hardware damage by using your old install are on par with getting struck by lighting It may not work because of the lack of support for your current chipset and hardware but it shouldnt smoke your box. _________________ An A-Z Index of the Linux BASH command line |

If you can help it, I would get the latest version (2008 beta2). Running the older version won't necessarily harm your computer, but you'll have a lot more updating to do than if you run the newest version. _________________

I do not have DVD burner and I don't have money to buy it.

you can get 800mb cd if you know where to look.
Then you can overburn that by 35mb
Infact, you can even get 900mb cd's. |
