|
|
This forums thread is for discussion of the www.gentoo.org posting, "Foundation officially reinstated by New Mexico." Post your comments and suggestions here. Quote: |
If you're interested in the legal standing of Gentoo, you can relax because in the past week, the State of New Mexico declared that the Gentoo Foundation Inc has returned to good standing and is free to do business. This accomplishment allows other aspects of the foundation's work to proceed again. The foundation takes care of Gentoo's intellectual property (copyrights, trademarks) and money. It ensures that nobody violates our copyrights and trademarks, serves as a place to hold money, and decides where to devote that money.
Thanks to everyone involved with returning Gentoo to good legal standing, and thanks to our community for your patience! |

So we are switching from having a council, but no foundation to having a foundation but no council?

Is the Gentoo Foundation a not-for-profit? Are donations made via that Paypal link tax deductible? |

scrappy,
The foundation is not yet registered with the IRS. Thats on our (trustees) todo list.
As I'm not a US citizen, I'm not sure if that matters for the tax deductible status or not.
Feel free to email trustees at gentoo dot org for a more complete answer. _________________ Regards,

No, it's set up as a 501(c)(6) rather than a 501(c)(3) so donations are not tax-deductible. |

The c6 gives you more ability to restrict membership, and there was some paranoia at the time about being taken over by Microsoft employees or something silly. The c6 also has more flexibility in our ability to receive extremely large donations from a single entity that could make up a significant fraction of our income, whereas a c3 requires you to have a more well-rounded donation income. |

Seriously now, as a community member it's good to see you starting to make the much-needed commitment to the less sexy but equally relevant tasks of leadership. More power to ya! |

More fuel for the eternal flame fests...

And if that's all that you are trying to do on this thread, I kindly ask you to leave.
Quote: | Meanwhile portage rots and gentoo dies of bit rot and developer apathy. |
If you have a problem with portage, feel free to open as many threads as you want/need on the relevant sections of the forums. If you want to discuss (and I mean "to discuss", and not "to troll") about the current state of portage, then open a new thread about it on gentoo chat (or in the portage section if you are going to discuss in a technical manner).
Please, keep this thread clean since your post is not related to the topic of the thread. You don't need to answer my post. Let's stop the noise here, please. |
