I've been waiting on the official 2008.0 release to do an install too. If the devs need more time, then I don't have a problem with that. They've definitely had their fair share of other issues as well. I just want to know what exactly why it is being delayed, what the current status is, and how soon we can expect to have the official release. The Gentoo project has all sorts of methods to keep the community updated; they should be using them. Just one quick update through the RSS feed or the forums would be satisfactory. |

If you really cannot wait, use the Gentoo 2008.0_beta2 release |

We should get some notice though if delivery is not on schedule. |

According to the release schedule, May 19 is when the final 2008.0 was supposed to be released. So, there is no more "day is not over" excuse. However, they haven't kept the release schedule up to date as far as what they have completed (beta 2 is still not marked as completed when in fact it is). There is nothing wrong with a deadline being pushed back. Lack of communication is the problem. |

From what I've seen you can't really go off of the release schedule. Also don't expect notice if the delivery is not on schedule. |

Regarding the schedule, please note the numerous notices saying that these are tentative target dates and that they may change without notice.
Open source projects are staffed by volunteers who have real lives to deal with. They are not paid. They have real jobs they have to deal with.
The release of a tentative schedule is curtesy they do not have to do.
Please stop whining about these dates.
No deadlines have been missed because there are no deadlines. There is no set date when the release is supposed to happen. These dates are a guide. That is all they are. |

I don't think anyone is disputing that fact nor whining about it. We are just wondering if we were going to get to enjoy the fruits of their labor this day or not. And just b/c it's a volunteer project doesn't mean that in and of itself is an excuse to publish random dates and go willy nilly with the release schedule. Not saying that is the case, but organization and communication are key even in volunteer / open source projects. |

Only thing that's for sure is that it will be released on December 31st 2008 or earlier. Otherwise it will be 2009.0 |

Hi all,
Can anyone explain why Gentoo wants to bring out a gui installer?
The previous one was too buggy to be of any use.
A gui installer will put it in the same league as ubuntu sabayon etc.
For me the rescuecd is # 1.It has everything you might need to make
a comfortable CLI install.
Gerard. _________________ To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo, has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.
The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.

this sounds familiar... 2008.0 profile maybe 2007.1 will actually make it into 2010.0. just fooling. |

Gerard. |
If the only thing seperating gentoo from ubuntu is how it's installed then I would go with ubuntu.
Why wouldn't a gui installer be wanted? Just to keep noobs away? |

I had some problems with a computer with that, and I used the SystemRescueCD instead and everything is fine. |

Don't know if anyone caught this or not yet, but the release schedule was finally updated to reflect the new target release date of June 23rd. (http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/release/2008.0/index.xml) It looks like the devs are managing to keep it moving along this time and we'll hopefully get to see the 2008.0 release on the 23rd. |

Yes, and Snapshot freezes and doc updates are still 'in progress', which means releng are still way off schedule, again. _________________
