When I went to emerge alsa-driver, it said

Code:

Nope, we can't do that. ALSA is already in ye old kernel

But, uh.... but.... b-b-b.... bwahhh.... duuhhhhh.....

It's not. At least, I didn't do it. In my /usr/src/linux config, I do NOT have ALSA in the kernel. It's a module.

What did I miss?

Heh. That's still "in" the kernel.

The problem is the zillion Gentoo user morons who see an "unknown symbol" error and are too lazy to use their brain. So, we get to see every mistake imaginable made whilst compiling a kernel, and then see it repeated a thousand times because they never read old threads.

Not that I'm bitter

I just figured that out. I went to check if there were an update to ALSA by pretending to emerge it, and up pops gentoo-sources.

*gears grind, things click*

Aha.

I emerged gentoo-sources rc4 (I had rc3) and I'm experimenting with kernel config for sound with it now.
