ACPI S3 sleep on ThinkPad X40; blank screen on wakeup [slvd]

I am trying to get sleep working on my X40. Followed the instructions in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/power-management-guide.xml but on wakeup the screen is blank or very dark, I can somewhat see something in X. Possibly the backlight doesnt turn on.

I can ssh into the machine but have found nothing except a reboot that restores the screen.
Using 2.6.25-gentoo-r3 with tp_smapi.

Added "acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode" to kernel parameters and it works now!
