I think pure-ftpd is easier. I ran proFTPd for a while and it was working fine. However blogger (http://blogger.com) couldn't work with it for whatever reason. A sysadmin friend said pure-ftpd was the best and I switched to that and it rocks. proFTPd took like 30 mins for my simple mind to configure. pureFTPd worked right away. |

depends on how it will be used, but.......
My favorite is ProFTPD. The configuration is very straight forward and quite flexible.

Just emerge it and set it up, there's a gentoo package for it. Otherwise look at http://www.pureftpd.org/ for any special config action you want. |

I get this when I try to execute pure-ftpd...
/usr/local/sbin/pure-ftpd: /lib/i686/libc.so.6: version `GCC_3.0' not found (required by /usr/local/sbin/pure-ftpd)
any suggestions

You would know you were running GCC3 if you were running GCC3. Also, this is sort of a standard thing with most *nix apps:

pure-ftpd kicks the crap out of proftpd. Using something other than PAM with in proftpd is hell. |

I guess the glFtpD rocks...
It's very "0day" oriented by this could be easy managed through the config file.
You should check http://www.glftpd.org
I'm using the daemon via the ucspi-tcp server (not inetd or xinetd) |

glftpd might rock but... "the source will be available soon."
What does that mean? There are exploits that making the source public would inform hackers? Or what?
Not really free software.

I have used pure-ftpd on many servers when the client requires it. I have found it to be very fast, stable, secure and easy to setup and administer. It is also very feature rich and allows for in-depth configuration. Overall everything I want in a basic FTP server.
Now, with all that being said, when I setup stuff for myself (instead of for clients) I always go with the SFTP server built-in to SSH. By far the worst thing about FTP is the constant transmission of passwords over insecure links. If you have a specific need for FTP, use pure-ftpd, if you just need to transfer files, use SFTP.
My 2 cents.

I setup pure-ftp in FTP-over-SSH as suggested in FAQ on their web. The incovinient thing is the only working client is SecureFX. I tried Putty SSH tunneling + a regular ftp client, but failed |

the fish (file transfer in a shell iirc) protocol is another way to transfer files over a ssh connection, there isn't even a need for an sftp server.
clients:
lftp (console)
kio_fish (kioslave for KDE 3, you can copy files from remote servers in konqueror then)
both are in gentoo, of course

For just transfering files you use scp _________________ Lego my ego, and I'll lego your knowledge

I've found proftpd to be quite sufficient for everything I use it for, and again as a user above posted, the config is quite easy. I started on it because it's what my Qube 2 ran without a problem for quite a while some time ago. It grandfathered in, and well, it's worked for me!(tm) |

We use proftpd on our lanparty every time, and every time it hasn't failed us. Speed is max, setup is easy, people are happy, we are happy Could handle a 600 Gb FTP easily. Then again, the only thing we need is anonymous ftp access, occassionally limited. When we want to leech ourselves, we use sftp to get passed by the limits, so no need to setup extra users & stuff _________________ Life is like a box of chocolates... I use proftpd too, and I think proftpd is easy to configure and I have no problems with it.
I have friends who use pure-ftpd and there are happy with it, so try them |
