Hi all:
Running 1.4_rc4 and have an interesting problem. Rebuilt the kerenel (vanilla sources) and I'm now getting a kernel ran out of data error during boot.
System was working prior to this: including KDE so I'm not sure what's happening.
Have attempted to rebuild kernel 4+ times using live cd, last time remerging vanilla sources to see if that's the problem.
System specs:
XP1800
1 gig ram
Sound Blaster PCI 16
Nvidia TNT2-M64. I have not gotten the nvidia drivers working yet.
Seagate 15gig on hda (hda1/hda2/hda3) Sony CDRW on IDE1a Generic 24X CD on IDE1b
Any help would be appreciated |

Hi All:
Since the problem has continued and I do not have a working system, I have solved it by blowing everything clear and starting over.
6 attempts to build a working kernel have failed, I do have the Nvidia drivers built and I susspect that's where the problem begin but I'm not going to continue diagnosing since I need the system up and running. |

When the kernel get very large, it happends that this error occurs. Try to build some of the things as modules instead. If you think that the nvidia drivers mess things up, jsut compile them as modules instead. As for the nvidia modules in specific, there are two of them... use the ones that you get whe merging nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx (I'm not sure about the exact names). Don't use the modules you get with the kernel source. At least that messed things up for me. |

This looks like a LILO problem. Did you rerun /sbin/lilo after changing your kernel ? |

Thanks all for the sugestions but it turns out my cflags were set to agressively. That's what was causing the problem. I'm now back up and running with more conservative optimization flags. |
