I have yesterday installed gentoo on my workstation, and i love it, i have never had faster system (i usually use Debian woody and windows NT4).

I have just compiled abiword with the command "emerge abiword", but it seems to use gtk1.2 instead of gtk2 - which i have inserted to my my make.conf for the same - it works for gftp..

I really like to have a standard gui for all my applications, and it annoys the eye, that abiword uses gtk1.2, thereby defaulting back to another theme...
I have included the relavant part of my make.conf file

make.con start:
-----------------------------------------------
USE="X gtk gtk2 gnome avi mmx tiff png dedicated mozilla sse crypt cups dvd encode joystick jpeg mpeg oggvorbis opengl usb truetype
xv 3dnow -alsa -qt -kde"
-----------------------------------------------
make.conf end:

Use the abiword-1.99.1.ebuild or the cvs ebuild somewhere on this forum.
Abiword 1.9x = gtk2

The Abiword gtk2 version is still in development, though it is MUCH nicer than the gtk1 version, it is still _quite_ buggy. That being said I use it as my main word processor because it's way faster than OpenOffice and because it integrates well with my gnome2 desktop.

If you want to try the gtk2 version open up the file /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask with your favorite text editor and comment out the following line:

Code:
# development version
>=app-office/abiword-1.1

So that it looks like this:

Code:
# development version
#>=app-office/abiword-1.1

Then emerge abiword again.

Make sure to report any bugs you may find to the abiword devs.

Take care

I've not had any problems with Abiword2 beta2, it'll work for 99.99% of your needs since it's more featureful than Abiword1.

You should emerge it since you can have both Abiword1 and Abiword2 installed side by side:
emerge /usr/portage/app-office/abiword/abiword-1.99.2.ebuild

It's not that buggy really, although I have only used it lightly so I don't really know.

On the integration comment, that is why Abiword is succeeding. For all the hype and polish that Open Office has, it just isn't integrated into Gnome2 and Abiword2 is.
