I'm posting this from my first gentoo machine (laptop). I just got KDE compiled and installed. I'v tried Caldera and Slackware in the past, but I broke both trying to install some application. Hopefully this won't be the case here. This was the most painstaking installation of an OS so far. Took me 2 days to get the base system installed and working with my PCMCIA nic...another 72 hours doing an "emerge xfree" and "emerge kde". Good thing is after that initial hurdle everything is so simple! I'm working on getting the battery monitor to show up and a usb mouse working right now. So far so good! Wish my machine was faster to speed up compile times!

Welcome to Gentoo. I too use Gentoo on a laptop and love it.

I nice all my emerges now and let them run in the background while I use my computer as normal (the screen program prevents problems interupting the emerges if you accidently close the window).

Once the basic system is up there really isn't that much waiting. It's just a different frame of mind. I can watch dvd's while emerging with no problem.

Here are a couple of lines from by .bashrc:
Code:
alias snice='sudo nice -n 5'
alias smerge='snice emerge'
