Bit of an old thread but i will update it if anyone is in the same boat, i found that gnome has a nice app called Meld that works very well for file/dir comparisons and applying changes.

I use Unison:

http://packages.gentoo.org/ebuilds/?unison-2.9.1

Which works across platforms, has a client and a server for Windows, works via local dir specs, SSH or RSH or even if worse comes to worst and there is nothing but TCP between the 2 hosts, it has its own proprietary protocol which will make it tick just via TCP.

I know it's a VERY old thread, but I thought I would update it.

Beyond Compare is now in beta stages on linux. You can get a download from http://www.scootersoftware.com

You can find the ebuild in my git overlay at:
https://git.lightning.homelinux.com/gitweb/?p=jeckhart-overlay.git;a=summary

If you use layman, add the following line to "overlays:" property in /etc/layman/layman.cfg :
https://git.lightning.homelinux.com/lightning-overlay.xml
and then run layman -a jeckhart-overlay

Hope this helps everyone.

John
