Hello,
I understand that this is generally a bad idea but what I need to do is copy some files from a CD (which I can't seem to be able to read under Windows for some strange reason) to my NTFS (Windows 2000) partition. What I'd like to know is what are the risks involved in doing that and what are the chances that I can do that without damaging my Windows installation. Any other tips are also welcome. Thank you in advance. |

I'd personally not take the risk unless you have an NTFS "data" partition (i.e., not the "C" installation partition). I have no specific experience related to the dangers of writing though.
I'd recommend making a "shared" fat32 partition to swap between Linux and Windows. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I wouldn't recommend enabling the ntfs write support in the kernel. I haven't tried it myself because the risk of losing everything outweighs the benefits in my opinion.
Can you just copy the files to your linux box and burn another cd or put it on a floppy. You could try uploading it somewhere and just downloading it to windows (email it to yourself?)
there are some programs for windows that will read linux partitions (if you copy the files to your linux drives). if you search google or the forum for something like "reading linux partitions windows" or something i'm sure you'll find them. i saw a thread earlier today mentioning some programs but i forgot the names. _________________ (rob) |

Thanks for the response. Ideally I'd like to create a separate partition for swapping/storing data (like pjp suggested) but I haven't thought of that earlier and now my entire harddrive is taken so I have no space to do that. I did take rouge's advice though and found and app called Explore2fs (http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm) which did the trick Again, thanks for your help. |
