Hello! I'm new to Gentoo, and it look to be a great distribution, but for now, I have some problems configuring my network connection... It seems that the driver bmac (wich is supposed to be the good driver to use with my G3 BW) is not on the minimal CD... When I'm entering "modprobe bmac", the result is "FATAL: Module bmac not found.", and when I enter "ls /lib/modules/'uname' -r'/kernel/drivers/net", I see a lot of drivers but bmac doesn't appears.
Is there something I'm doing wrong, or maybe the bmac.ko driver is not on my CD? How could I arrange that?
Thanks a lot for your help, and sorry for my english, I usualy speak french. |

TheKiller,
Welcome to Gentoo.
From your error message, your diagnosis that the bmac module is not avaible to you is correct.
You don't say which liveCD you are using so I cannot determine if your CD is older then your hardware.
The easiest solution is to find another liveCD, (not Gentoo) that boots and provides the module you need and use it to install Gentoo.
The next solution is to use the minimal Gentoo CDs run from RAM option, so you can use sneakernet to get the files you need to install and have Gentoo boot your own kernel. The run from RAM option allows the liveCD to be unmounted and removed, so you can load files from CD. _________________ Regards,

Thanks a lot for your answer! In fact, I used the last minimal installation liveCD, I just downloaded it yesterday. So, the liveCD is not older than my hardware (my hardware have been made in 1999, it's a PowerMac G3 BW that I want to use as a server to set up a homemade VPN, running without a GUI), but I just don't understand why the driver is not on the CD, because I saw on the boards it was supposed to be included. Anyway. I'll test it, thanks a lot for your answer, and I'll tell if it functionned maybe it could help someone else. |
