emerge gnome.. fails on USE flags

Hi There, this is my first post and i'm a rank n00b in regards to gentoo linux, so please be gentle

I have installed gentoo in a VM and am trying to emerge gnome, however it errors saying i must have the use flag X set. Well, this flag exists in my make.conf file along with the other use flags that are required, how can i make this emerge see that this use flag is set? i set the use flags with ufed tool...

You probably need to recompile one or more packages with these new useflags: emerge -avuND1 world
