Hey. I have never dealt with Linux before, but, obviously, I would like to install it on one of my comps and kind of test it out. I have two comps that I am trying to install Linux on. I have completely formatted and repartitioned the hard drives. They both use Intel Pent. 3 processors but one is an IBM computer and the other one has an "All-Pro computers) Logo on it (??).
I have downloaded "install-x86-minimal-2008.0_beta2.iso" and "livecd-i686-installer-2008.0_beta2-r1.iso" and burnt them both to separate CDs. I have changed the boot order so that the BIOS checks the CD drive before the A drive or the hard drive, and this is what I get:
Invalid boot disk. Replace disk then press any key.
And I can't go any further (not that I'm really expecting to since it can't even recognize the boot disk)
I know I'm doing something wrong, I just don't know what.
I'm not entirely sure what other specs are needed for my comps, but I can give whatever you need. |

what did you use to burn the iso's? it sounds like you might have accidentally burned the file to a disc, instead of as an image...

you don't need those files, but please check the md5sum against the iso's.

With nero you need to make sure you select the finalize disk option. Does that ring a bell? |

I'm not disagreeing with you at all, but what tells you that it is NOT the system? I have to admit neither of these computers have been 100% compliant with me on any level (though what computer IS). Just wondering. |

It is very very unlikely that two systems will not boot a bootable CD. Most computers fall over themselves to boot CDs if the CD is first in the boot list.
Just a guess. |

Okay... I got all that figured out, and am now trying to install Gentoo. Once I choose the kernel I want, though, I start getting a LOT of errors.
Code: | Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 7616 |
This error comes up multiple times, including "logical block 7616" up to "logical block 7625"
Code: | SQUASHFS error: sb_bread failed reading block 8x3a7a
SQUASHFS error: Unable to read page, block e95ab1 size 8e50 |
This error just pops up multiple times as it is.
Code: | Error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libc.so.6: cannot read file
The data: Input/output error
Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! |
What am I doing wrong? |

Try the 2007.0 install media instead and see if you get better results. Depending on how old the machines in question are, the older media might give you better luck.
Blessed be!
